A brief history of Ireland
1841 - Census of Ireland records a population of over 8 million
1845-1847 - The potato crops fails due to Blight resulting in the
Great Famine. The population of Ireland greatly
reduced due to death by starvation and emigration.
1847- Daniel O'Connell, pioneer of Catholic Emancipation and first
elected Catholic Lord Mayor of Dublin since 1688, dies.
1858- Formation of the Irish Republicasn Brotherhood (Fenians)
simultaineously in Ireland ~& the United States.
1867 - Defeat of the Fenian Rising.
1870- Gladstones first Land Act gives protection to tenants for
the first time.
1874 - 59 Irish Home Rule MP's elected to Parliament.
Obstruction of Parliament commences.
1875- Charles Stewart Parnell elected MP for County Meath
1879 - Land League founded in County Mayo by Michael Davitt
1884- Foundation of the Gaelic Athletic Association in Thurles
Co Tipperary.
1886 - Defeat of Gladstones first Home Rule Bill in Westminster
Parliament.
1893- Foundation of the Gaelic League
1895- Conviction and imprisonment of Oscar Wilde
1899 - Opening of the Irish Literary Theatre with production of
WB Yeats "The Countess Cathleen"
1905- Foundation of Sinn Fein in Dublin by journalist Arthur
Griffith.
1912 - Introduction of the third Home Rule Bill in the British
Parliament.
1912- The sinking of the Titanic, built in Belfast
1913 - The Dublin strike and lockout organised by Jim Larkin
& William Martin Murphy ended in a victory for the
employers.
1914 - Outbreak of World War One - Home Rule becomes law
but it is suspended for the duration of the war.
1915 - The sinking of the liner Lusitania off Old Head of Kinsale
by the German navy.
1916 - 24th April THE EASTER RISING takes place, Proclamation
of the Irish Republic is read by Padraig Pearse. The
Rising is defeated and its Leaders executed.
1916 - 1st July: Battle of the Somme begins on the Western
Front Many Irish (both Nationalist & Unionist lose their
lives)
1917 - Eamon de Valera elected MP for East Clare
1919- First Irish Dail meets on the 21st January with Constance
Markievicz being the first female member elected.
1921-1922 Treaty signed gives birth to an Irish Free State with
26 counties. This causes a split in Sinn Fein, with
Michael Collins leading pro-treaty side and Eamonn
de Valera leading the anti-treaty side. Collins is
killed in County Cork.
1937: Bunreacht na hEireann id ratified by the Irish people.
1938: Dr Douglas Hyde becomes the first President of Ireland
1949: Formal establishment of the Republic of Ireland which
ceases to be a member of the British Commonwealth.
1955: Republic of Ireland admitted to membership of the United
Nations.
1963: Visit of John F. Kennedy to Ireland
1966: Destruction of Nelsons Pillar in Dublin by IRA bomb.
1968: Civil rights marches in Derry are met with police brutality
and result in riots and the collapse of civil order. Northern
Ireland enters phase known as "The Troubles"
1972: The Troubles in Northern Ireland reaches a peak with 500
deaths, 10,000 shootings and 2,000 bombs planted.
1973: Ireland and UK join the European Economic Community
(European Union)
1974: Dublin and Monaghan bombings shock the nation.
1979: Pope John Paul visits Ireland
1981: Hunger strikes by Republican prisoners in Northern
Ireland. Ten die in pursuit of political prisoner status.
Bobby Sands is the first to die.
1985: Anglo Irish Agreement signed by taoiseach Garrett
Fitzgerald and British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher
1990: Mary Robinson elected first female President of Ireland.
1994: IRA ceasefire.
1995: Begining of unprecendented economic boom in the
Republic "The Celtic Tiger"
1996: Journalist Veronica Guerin shot dead resulting in changes
in drug trafficking legislation.
1998: Good Friday Agreement is signed providing for a
restoration of a devolved power-sharing executive to
Northern Ireland.
2002: Republic adopts the Euro as its currency.
2006: Preliminary census results show a population of 4.2
million, the highest figure recorded since 1861.
